About Erlene
I am a fiber artist and quilter. My art typically reflects aspects of nature. I love to capture moments with my camera and translate that into fabric. I discovered I could combine art, quilting, and a lifetime of sewing skills. The rest, as they say, is history. I make all sorts of quilts, as well as fiber art, and indulge in my other interest, teaching. New to Colorado I look forward to exploring and experiencing the changes the environment will have on my work.
I attended nursing school at Kings County Hospital Center School of Nursing. My Bachelor of Arts was obtained at Trenton State University; Master’s Degree at Fairliegh Dickenson University. My career has consisted of nursing, teaching, and counseling, with a final speciality in addiction nursing. I am now retired. About 30 years ago, I began taking courses in drawing and painting. I enjoy painting with water colors, pastels and oils. Twelve years ago, I began my quilt education by taking a hand quilting course at my local quilt shop. I quickly moved into doing most of my work by machine. Ten years ago, I discovered and began exploring fiber art. Life has changed!
There will never be enough time to make all the quilts in my head, but the machine allows me to make more! It is such a joy to “paint” with fabric, thread and various embellishments. I often purchase fabric and threads just because they are beautiful. The quilt takes shape in my mind as I handle my purchases. Waiting until I can start cutting is a trial. I hand dye and/or paint some of my fabrics. As long as the process continues to challenge me, I will make quilts. The quilts I make please my eyes and delight my spirit. It is hoped the viewer of my work experiences some of that same joy.
